D.O.E Expedition, Midgies and Collapsing Tents

31/08/2008

Clouds of midges were hovering outside the door of our squint tent. They had held their siege for an hour but now our rumbling stomachs forced us out into the fray. The setting up of the Trangia cooker was made in several frenzied attempts and then the inevitable rush back into the tent. Once the meal was ready there were already so many midges inside the tent so we decided we where better of outdoors-where at least we could try and move away from them. Our expedition leader; a smug man called Sean Foster smiled at us from the window of the bothy where he and his co-leader were enjoying their meal in a thoroughly midge free environment. As our attempts to evade the midges became more desperate everyone began to run in tight circles around their tents. A short while later 3 of their number had tripped and fallen over their guy ropes and landed flat on the one tent each. They where then firmly instructed to re-erect the tents which they did. This is an experience which allows young adventurers to prepare for later expeditions. A full on worst case scenario no wind, midges and collapsing tents
Deuter Made a difference Because The next morning I was easily able to stuff everything into Aircntact Pro 70+15.

Airport/holiday benefits.

02/11/2008

Going on a family holiday to Cyprus meant getting my handluggage sorted. I used my Mountain Biking Speedlite 30, and got everything I needed in it, plus the kids electronic games, wife's makeup and presents on the return trip. No problems, no hassle! Totally perfect for walking/beach trips during the holiday too.
Deuter Made a difference BecauseThe Speedlite 30 is a perfect example of "adaptable" kit. Normally I use it for my BCSA Mountain Bike leaders award courses that I tutor/teach. It takes a hydration unit, waterproofs, 1st aid kit, food, map, compass and spares parts without hesitation. Commutes to/from work are also easily handled. Using it as handluggage on foreign trips shows it's adaptability and ease of use. In March 2008 I had a very bad "over-the-bars" Mtb crash on the Red Bull trail in Coed y Brenin. Although suffering a broken femur, the pack saved me from additional possible spine injuries. I wouldn't be without it!

Why I should have picked Deuter

14/12/2008

Why I should have picked Deuter. Well when travelling in Thailand, having a crappy day, that got wet at a drop of a hat, could fit anything in it, and want flexible enough to wear, made my trip more difficult. That or using a plastic bag whilst out shopping.
Deuter Made a difference Because Deuter would have made a difference, as they are perfect. Having seen one in Bangkok, I am now determined to buy one now.

Yorkshire Three Peaks

16/02/2010

I was competing in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on an awful, wet and windy july day. We were making good progress, and saw the opportunity to stop and have some lunch, at just under 5 hours through. We open up our sacks, and the groans! Lunch was wet! There were three very soggy sandwichs making three very unhappy people. My face of sheer delight though as I open my Deuter up to reveal dry, fresh cheese and pickle sandwichs! The perfect pick me up for the day! Four different brands of rucksacks had failed all except me and my trusty Deuter. As you can imagine, it didn't take long for the other three to invest after that!
Deuter Made a difference BecauseThe rain cover and general waterproofing of the bag is superb. Everything inside was kept perfectly dry with no additional coverings. Lunch, valuables and all my clothes to change into!!

A Wander Through the Cuillin

21/03/2010

My cousin had never climbed a Cuillin, Red or Black, despite over twenty visits to the Isle of Skye. As an introduction, and partially due to our bad backs(!), we decided on the walk down the centre of the Cuillin down Glen Sligahan to the central peak of Sgurr na Stri. The clouds were oppressive as we set out, promising either brilliant sun or aggressive weather as only the ‘isle of mist’ can. The walk down the vale meandered following the river, via the ‘bloody stone’, the site of ancient clan battles, and skirting the flanks of the Cuillin foothills. After 7km or so the path wound upwards, the clouds parted exposing the shear perfect flanks of Blaven, the Black Cuillin outlier, and Marsco the Red Cullin sentinel in the middle of the glen. As the path topped the Druim nan Ramh ridge we peered over to see the silver shimmer of Lock Coirusk, the lake at the heart of the Black Cuillin, reflecting like a mirror. We stopped, eating and taking photos of the main Cuillin ridge looming out of the mist to our left, and the sun dapped ridge leading up to Sgurr na Gillean. Midges were biting hard so we decided to push on to Sgurr na Stri. In about an hour we stood at the top of the ‘little’ Cuillin relishing the panorama around us, now framed with the Minch and the southern Inner Isles as well as the Cuillin, mist swirling to atmospheric effect.
Deuter Made a difference Because my Deuter Guide was fantastic on this trip, reducing the impact on my back, and providing excellent utility through out. In particular the hydration compatability was very useful, as was the larger lid compartment and side access zip, enabling me to get to waterproofs and camera.

Sixty at Sixty

03/08/2010

I took up running at the age of 32 as an aid in giving up smoking. Within a few years I had really got hooked having completed many marathons and was attracted to Ultra Running. For my 40th Birthday I packed a Silva Rucksack and ran solo the length of Ireland from Mizen Head to Malin head. for my 50th I ran solo from Galway to Dublin. On the eve of my 60th I packed my Deuter Cross air took a flight to Glasgow, overnight B+B and on the morning of my 60th run from Glasgow to Edinburgh along the Forth, Clyde and Union Canals. All my kit was in a Deuter Cross Air 24 - it did not let me down. I arrived that evening to meet my daughter Fiona at Edinburgh Quays

One Man and his Dog

23/09/2010

Many Thanks to Ken Charlton for sending in his story. I think this illustrates a uniques selling point for Deuter bags!

I was walking in the Lake District last weekend with my son and his friend. We stopped to talk to a shepherd collecting his sheep on the fells below Skiddaw. I heard my son say "Daaaad". When I turned around it was to see the shepherd dog peeing on my Deuter Futura 32AC rucksak!

Deuter Made a difference because .... :Deuter made a difference because the quality of the fabric prevented the liquid from penetrating into the sack itself. A quick wipe with a moist tissue and we were off to continue our walk. A thorough wash once home and the rucksac looked as new with no lingering smell.

Thank you Deuter!
